Tanja Jurasch has always been a highly practical person, much preferring to work with her hands. Since October, she has been doing just that as a mechatronics technician at Krones. In this article, she tells us why she can’t imagine doing anything else.

University studies, engineering technician certification, master craftsman, advanced training: These days, there’s is a seemingly endless variety of options for continuing your education and furthering your career. But in many companies, people with vocational training certificates are, in fact, more highly sought after than ever before. And, as Tanja Jurasch shows us, these jobs are fun! Tanja is a mechatronics technician at Krones, where she spends her days building labelling machines – and she loves her job. “I have always wanted to work in a skilled trade. Early on, I had considered going into joinery. And then I realized that mechatronics technicians do more or less the same thing, except that they work with metal instead of wood,” she recalls. Around ten years ago, she completed secondary school and embarked on her vocational training.

Working on paper is not her thing

In the subsequent years, she has frequently been asked if she might like to advance her career, for instance by taking her technician certificate to the next level because, as she’s often been told, she certainly has what it takes. But Tanja Jurasch has intentionally opted against any such career moves. “I am completely content with my work. I love the hands-on aspect and have no desire to leave it. I never enjoyed school. And I always say that if I’d wanted to work in an office, I’d have done the training for that instead,” she laughs. She much prefers to make things reality rather than draw them out on paper.

Focused and happy – Tanja Jurasch thoroughly enjoys her work.

Her daily work routine is anything but routine. Each morning, she first has to see what’s on the agenda, which parts of the labeler have been delivered and what the next step is. Meanwhile, her workflows involve a wide variety of tasks, including sawing, grinding and bending metal, applying lubricant and much more. “The whole thing has to work both mechanically and electronically in the end – and of course it has to look good, too,” says Tanja Jurasch. Which means, it never gets boring. “And something else I like: The job came with my own kit, including a tool trolley and coveralls. In general, whenever I need something, it gets ordered right away,” she says.

Right now, she’s nearly the only woman on the team, but that doesn’t bother her. As she puts it, the entire team has welcomed her right from the start and she has enjoyed their camaraderie. “I’ve only been with Krones since October. And though people often say it’s hard to get started in a new company, we’re getting along just fine. I’ve found that someone is always available to help when I need it.”

More free time thanks to Krones

The 28-year-old doesn’t just enjoy the diverse nature of her job and the teamwork. She also deeply appreciates the flexibility to organize her time as she sees fit. “Unlike my previous employer, Krones really prioritizes work-life balance. I have flexible working hours and can make better use of my weekends,” says Jurasch. She prefers to spend that extra free time with her partner, her three cats or friends. “I’m big into gaming,” she admits. At home, she can often be found at her PC, either playing computer games or streaming. She whole-heartedly recommends a career as a mechatronics technician to anyone who’s interested. “It’s probably helpful to have a technical mind,” she says with a laugh. If you’ve got that, it can really be your dream job.
