Krones and Owens-Illinois have concluded a collaboration agreement, so as to combine their specialised knowledge of glass handling and mechanical engineering.
    • O-I Glass and Krones signed a strategic collaboration agreement that aims to elevate glass by innovating together and to jointly create solutions for the growing glass market.

In the French town of Chazelles-sur-Lyon, the leading glass bottle manufacturer Owens-Illinois (O-I) operates one of its three European plants specialising in the decoration of glass containers. A DecoType Compact direct printing machine from Krones’ Dekron subsidiary has been up and running at this facility since 2019.

“For O-I, glass is the preferred packaging solution in a world that increasingly values health, premium products and the environment. Not only does it maintain the integrity of the products, as customers intend, but it also offers magnificent opportunities for establishing brands and implementing sustainable solutions,” explains Andres Lopez, President and CEO at O-I.

Now Krones and Owens-Illinois have boldly ventured onto new terrain, going beyond their client-vendor relationship pure and simple: under a recently concluded collaboration agreement, the two companies intend in future to join forces in creating solutions for the growing glass market.

“In production facilities all over the world, the products of O-I and Krones are already encountering each other. So it was absolutely logical to improve still further the compatibility of Krones’ lines and the glass containers from O-I,” explains Christoph Klenk, CEO of the Krones Group.

And for O-I, too, collaboration was the obvious choice. “We’ve known from our cooperation at the Lyon facility that Krones is a dependable partner, a byword for quality. What’s more, Krones is a one-stop shop for us because the ink needed for direct printing is supplied by their KIC Krones subsidiary,” adds Andres Lopez.

With the agreement, the two companies are now combining O-I’s specialised knowledge of glass with Krones’ leading competence in manufacturing machines and lines for the food and beverage industry. The collaboration’s goals include further improvements in glass filling and packaging line speed and efficiency, development of innovative and sustainable glass packaging solutions, and system optimisations for digital container decoration.

Using the right ink is crucial

Digital decoration technology enables clients to efficiently print on their glass and PET containers in high quality, thus achieving stunning effects. To get optimum results, they need UV inks that have been especially adapted to suit the requirements of digital decoration technology. But notwithstanding all these resistance properties, the ink must not put the containers’ recyclability at risk.
The multicroma UV inks from Krones cover the entire CMYK colour space and provide brilliant colours even on rPET. Despite their high abrasion and moisture resistance, the recycling circuit is not interrupted because the inks can be removed from the containers without leaving any residues.
